great product (2010-09-01) : 5/5
Easy to set up and use. Getting free live TV into my laptop is awesome. Seems expensive for what it probably costs to manufacture, but it works great, so I'm happy.
Couldn't get Comcast channels. (2010-08-23) : 2/5
I returned the item after not being able to pick up more than about 15 Comcast Channels. Went back and forth with Elgato on emails on trying to resolve. So, by the time I returned to Amazon some 35 days later, they only gave me a partial credit. I had TVMicro previously that worked about a year on my Mac before going bad. Really miss having a TV on my computer but, stumped on what to try next.
Not recommended... (2010-06-29) : 1/5
Perhaps this item works better with MAC systems. I have a Windows 7 PC and could not get this product to work. Since the company does not allow for voice communications, email technical support proved to be inefficient. Moreover, the technician that reponded to my request for assistance wanted to know where I got the driver for their product, perhaps not realizing that the CD that came with the product had the driver on it. In addition, my operating system recognized the item and installed the proper driver for it anyway (same as on CD). In any event, I am sending this product back. I do not like their technical support, nor the response I received (or lack thereof). Moreover, the instructions and information available to PC users is virtually nonexistant. I did an internet search and the majority of users were MAC users. The only information I found was that the Windows driver that comes with the product would work with Windows Media Center. By the way, no information was found on how to configure with WMC. My attempts to configure with WMC were not successful. I am not a novice computer user by any stretch of the imagination, therefore because of the lack of support, instruction, and ability to get this product to work with my level of experience, I cannot recommend this product to other Windows users. In addition, I do find some of the other positive reviews suspect as it appears that the only product they ever rated was this one. When I see this, I think that perhaps certain companies are trying to bolster public opinion for their own products.
A great way to watch and record OTA (2010-06-24) : 5/5
We had DirecTV for years and dumped it for a rooftop antenna and the Elgato system. I have a mac mini (1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo with 1GB Ram) that it hooks up to and writes all the HD recordings to a USB external drive, as one hour HD recordings are around 4-5GB. I export some of them for watching on my iPhone and I can even schedule remotely from the iPhone, with the additional APP. I have the EyeTv software on the laptop, as well, and I watch programs recorded by the mini on the laptop, another great feature.
I love this system. I am currently running EyeTV 3.4. We use to have Tivo with our DirecTV and I thought nothing could compare, but this does a great job. Considering I don't have to pay [...]/mo. for Direct anymore, I can live with the difference. As a Tivo user and lover, I will say it again, this is good. Certainly better than what Comcast offers. Somebody in another review complained about the TV Guide service at [...]year. Please [...]/year is a joke, it is so cheap. If that is why you don't like this system, you are looking for the wrong solution. There was also a complaint about recording quality and jumpiness. I have none of that. My recordings are beautiful. I leave my mini on 24/7, and while that isn't the best use of power, I am thankful that the mini is a power sipper and not a hog. I don't feel so bad leaving it on all the time. Besides, it is busy doing podcast downloads and other stuff during the day, so putting it to sleep is not practical. Again, if the wake to record feature is the only think you are looking for, then maybe this isn't the right system for you.
Exporting is a bit hard on the mini and I would suggest the external H264 processor if you think you will export lots of recordings.
I can't say enough great things about this system and Elgato. And as the icing on the cake, they released a special audio filter to be used during the 2010 World cup to help dampen the Vuvuzela horns. How great is that?
I also found a way to get the recordings to show up on FrontRow, so you can use one program to view all the media on your mac.
Wow, That Was Easy (2010-06-02) : 5/5
For context, I am new to MACs. I know to expect trouble loading PC software and even more integrating hardware. The EyeTVOne experience on the MAC was quick and easy! Everything simply just worked right from the start. Great reception, easy autotune, easy channel editing, nice picture and sound. Used simple DVR functions (pause and play) but haven't tried recording yet. We use the MAC for all AV with sound routed through older BOSE system.
