Plantronics M214C Headset with Adjustable Volume

Disappointed with this Plantronics headset (2010-09-01) : 2/5
I guess you could call me a Plantronics fan. I've used various of their headsets over the years and have always been satisfied - until now.

I've been using their M210 headsets with our cordless phones for years.

With a new Panasonic 2-line cordless phone system, which is a disappointment itself, I thought the in-line volume control might be helpful,

It isn't. The mute control on my unit appears to be defective and doesn't operate. The control box adds just enough weight to make the cord swing unpredictably whewn you pick the unit up, increasing the odds of getting tangled or caught on something.

Audio quality in the earpiece is, putting it bluntly, awful. Transmitted voice quality is also poor.

Fit is comfortable and construction is adequate.

Maybe I just got a defective unit in terms of the sound quality. But the in-line control box is enough of a pain to convince me to return this unit and stick with the Plantronics M210 units.

I have bought two of these headsets in less than a year and both broke in less than three months in the same spot. I don't use a headset that often so this has been a huge problem and a surprise from a normally trusted brand like Panasonic. I would not recommend this product.

This is a very comfortable headset for the price and the sound quality is very good. I love it especially since I am on the phone a lot and this way it keeps my hands free to work on the computer as well.
No more cradling the phone between your shoulder and ear and subsequent aches.

My only question mark about this product is its durability, since I haven't had it very long. It's very lightweight, which makes it quite comfortable, but also could lead to problems later on (just speculating, it's been perfect so far). The adjustment mechanism is just like you find on lower-end headphones, except only on one side, the earpiece side. It's so light, and nicely padded, that I could almost forget I'm wearing it. People say they can hear me fine and I have gotten no complaints. The long boom I think is perfect; it picks up your voice well but it's off to side slightly so people on the other end don't hear you breathing.

Otherwise it's just as advertised. The volume and mute and (I assume) gain controls work fine, and the clip stays on if you choose to use it. Make sure the cord is long enough for you. If you want to plug it into a corded set and walk around the room or something it won't work, but for a cordless phone that you can put in your pocket or clip on, it's just fine. Oh, and the output sound quality is just fine too, at least as good as my phone itself and maybe better. Certainly far better than speakerphone.

I've heard that wired headsets tend to wear out after about a year, but if that proves to be the case this was only 15 bucks, so it's annoying to landfill something like that, but not financially a problem.

I was very pleased with the quality of the unit, considering the low price. It is comfortable and delivers very good sound quality from both the speaker and microphone. the only negatives are the volume control seems to not have great range and the cord is a bit short. However, for the price this unit was well worth it.
